EASY DIY BABY SHOWER STAND + BANNER

I love a good DIY party project, especially when I can make something that looks custom without spending a fortune!

For my niece’s baby shower, I volunteered to take care of all the decor if everyone else would handle the food… seemed like the perfect deal to me, ha!

One of the things I made was this simple DIY baby shower backdrop stand and personalized banner. I used PVC pipe to create the stand, a drop cloth for the backdrop, and my Cricut to add a custom design.

It was surprisingly easy to make, and I love that the stand can be reused for weddings, birthdays, baby showers, and other events. You can change the design and ribbon to match just about any party!

Step 1: Build the PVC Backdrop Stand

First, I built the DIY baby shower backdrop stand using 1/2-inch PVC pipe. PVC is perfect for a project like this because it’s inexpensive, lightweight, and easy to customize to whatever size you need.

I started by cutting all of my PVC pieces to size. I used a miter saw, but you don’t need one for this project! PVC pipe cutters are an inexpensive alternative and are made specifically for cutting PVC.

For the upright frame, I used:

• Two 5-foot PVC pipes
• One 2-foot PVC pipe
• Two 90-degree PVC connectors

For the base, I used:

• Two 2-foot PVC pipes
• Four 1-foot PVC pipes
• Two T-shaped PVC connectors
• Four elbow PVC connectors

Then I connected the pieces together to create the freestanding backdrop frame.

The nice thing about making your own PVC backdrop stand is that you can easily adjust the dimensions depending on your space or the size of your banner.

Tip: Don’t feel like you have to make yours exactly the same size as mine! Measure the space where you plan to use your backdrop and adjust the PVC lengths accordingly.

STEP 2: Design Your BABY Shower Banner

Once my backdrop stand was ready, it was time to make the banner!

I created my design using ChatGPT, but there are several ways you could approach this. Canva would be a great option if you want to design it digitally, or you could keep it simple and paint directly onto the canvas using stencils. The best part is that you can use whatever tools you’re most comfortable with!

To print my design using the Cricut Joy Xtra, I split the sign into three separate documents using Canva, each measuring 1333 px × 8000 px. I used ChatGPT to help me figure out the right document size. Also, be sure sure to download your files with a transparent background!

This is also where you can really personalize your backdrop. Add the bride’s name, a fun saying, the wedding date, or anything else you’d like!

Have fun choosing fonts and colors that coordinate with the rest of your baby shower decor.

Don’t Have a Cricut?

You absolutely don’t need one for this project!

If you want to keep the cost and complexity down, you can use stencils and fabric paint to create your design on the canvas instead.

Step 3: Cut the Design With Your Cricut

Once I had my design ready, I uploaded it to Cricut Design Space and used Smart Iron-On sheets for the design.

Cricut Design Space will walk you through the cutting process, so don’t worry if you’re new to using a Cricut. Just follow the prompts for your specific material.

There is one VERY important thing to remember when working with iron-on: Turn Mirror ON before you cut! This is an easy step to forget, but if you don’t mirror your design, it will be backwards when you apply it to your fabric.

Once everything was cut, I used my Cricut hook to weed out the negative space, leaving only the parts of the design I wanted to transfer onto the canvas.

Step 4: Apply the Design TO YOUR DROP CLOTH

For the banner itself, I used a 5-foot by 4-foot canvas/drop cloth.

Instead of cutting the canvas down, I folded it in half. I liked doing it this way because it gave the banner a little more weight and structure.

Once my design was weeded, I placed it on the canvas with the sticky side pressed down against the fabric.

I used my Cricut EasyPress to apply the design. Cricut will tell you the recommended temperature, pressure, and pressing time based on the material you’re working with. This is one of the reasons I love using an EasyPress—it takes a lot of the guesswork out of the process!

Can You Use a Regular Iron?

Yes!

If you don’t have an EasyPress, you can use a regular household iron. It’s just a little trickier because you’ll need to control the temperature and pressure yourself.

Make sure you follow the application instructions for your specific iron-on material, and take your time to make sure the design adheres properly.

Step 5: Hang the Drop Cloth

Once my design was finished, I attached the canvas to the top of the PVC stand.

Instead of doing anything complicated, I simply used three safety pins along the top to secure the banner.

I also added some cute red ribbon, which gave it an extra decorative touch.

And that’s it!

A simple PVC frame, a canvas drop cloth, and a personalized design turned into a custom-looking baby shower backdrop.

While I made this one specifically for a baby shower, you could use the same idea for so many different occasions!
