Let’s be honest—walking into a thrift store feels a little bit like entering Furniture Flipper Disneyland. You never know what treasures (or weird surprises) you’re going to find. But over time, I’ve learned how to spot the pieces with the most potential, the kind of furniture that’s begging for a glow-up.

If you’ve ever stared at a dusty, wobbly table and wondered, “Is this worth dragging to my garage?”, this list is for you. Here are the 5 things I always look for when I’m thrifting or searching Facebook Marketplace for flip-worthy furniture.

5 things I always look for when I’m searching for flip-worthy furniture

1. Solid Wood (a.k.a. the Holy Grail)

If it’s made of real wood, I’m already halfway to putting it in my cart. Solid wood furniture is sturdier, sands better, paints beautifully, and lasts forever. Pressed particle board? Meh. Unless it’s really special, I usually pass.

Pro tip: Knock on the side or underside. If it sounds hollow, it’s probably not solid. Look for dovetail joints too—that’s like the furniture version of a love note from the craftsman.

2. Good Bones

Even if the finish is outdated or the color makes you cringe, check the structure. Are the legs stable? Is the frame solid? Can it be tightened or reinforced with a little elbow grease? If yes, it’s got “good bones,” and that’s a win in my book.

3. Interesting Details

Carved legs, unique hardware, fun curves—these are the things that turn a simple flip into a showstopper. I live for a funky shape or some old-school charm that I can modernize with paint and stain.

4. Drawers That Slide (Or At Least Can)

Nothing kills a flip faster than drawers that stick or fall out entirely. When I find a dresser, I always pull out the drawers to check the slides. Bonus points if they just need a little sanding or wax to glide like new.

5. The Price is Right

It doesn’t have to be dirt cheap, but if I’m spending time, paint, and love on a piece, I want the price to leave room for the work I am about to put in. I’ll pay more for something solid and special—but let’s not get wild. Also always negotiate. If someone lists a side table for $20, there is no harm in offering them $10. The worst they can say is no.

Best Place to Look for Furniture to Flip

Facebook Marketplace (My Secret Weapon)

If you’re not stalking Facebook Marketplace at least once a day, you’re missing out. This is one of my absolute favorite places to find furniture to flip. But don’t just hit that “interested” button—message the seller and ask smart questions, like:

  • “Do the drawers open and close smoothly?”
  • “Is it solid wood, veneer, or laminate?”

Pro tip: You can’t sand laminate (it’ll peel), so if you’re planning to refinish or stain the piece, you’ll want hardwood or veneer.

What I Always Look For in Online Listings

  • Symmetry: I tend to skip dressers or pieces that feel off-balance or uneven. If the drawer layout is strange and can’t be changed, I move on.
  • Shape: The overall frame should have potential. Ask yourself, “Do I like this shape?”—because if you don’t, no amount of paint is going to help.
  • Function: Make sure those drawers glide like butter. Sticky, broken drawers? Might be more trouble than it’s worth unless you’re confident fixing them.

Things to Consider Before You Buy Furniture To Flip

Q: How do I know if something is worth flipping?
A: Look for solid wood, a unique design, and fixable flaws. If it’s too far gone (broken, warped, smells like mystery cat), skip it.

Q: What should I avoid?
A: Mold, deep water damage, strong smells, and major cracks could mean structural issues. No, thank you.

Q: How can I negotiate the price?
A: Be polite, point out flaws, and ask if there’s any wiggle room. Some stores even have discount days or colored tag sales—don’t be shy!

Q: Should I always bring a truck?
A: Not always, but if you’re serious about flipping, it’s smart. At the very least, know if the store holds items or offers delivery. You don’t want to fall in love and then panic because you drove a car too small to fit the piece of furniture.

So there you go! Next time you hit the thrift store or search Facebook Marketplace, channel your inner furniture whisperer and look for the pieces hiding in plain sight. Flip smart, shop happy, and don’t forget to share your latest finds—I’m always up for a little flip-spiration!
