Instead of ditching it, I decided to use a little creativity, some problem-solving, and a whole lot of floral goodness.

Today I’m walking you through exactly how I repaired the drawer fronts, created the raised floral details, and gave this dresser its dreamy final look — plus tips, tricks, and FAQs to help you do the same!

Supplies You’ll Need FOR A DIY Floral Dresser Makeover

  • Wood filler
  • Sandpaper (120 + 220 grit)
  • Molding appliqués (I used floral + leaf designs)
  • Strong adhesive (E6000, CA glue, or wood glue)
  • Clamps or painter’s tape
  • Primer
  • Paint (I used a soft white for that timeless look)
  • Topcoat (matte or satin works beautifully)
  • New knobs
  • Optional: scraper, putty knife, heat gun for veneer removal

Step-by-Step: How I Fixed and Flipped This Floral Dresser

Step 1: Clean + Remove Hardware

Take off the knobs, wipe everything down, and inspect for loose or damaged veneer.

Step 2: Remove Damaged Veneer

This dresser had areas where the veneer was lifting. I used a scraper and gentle pressure to remove the loose pieces. (Tip: A heat gun can help soften stubborn areas.)

Step 3: Fill & Sand

Once the loose veneer was gone, I filled those spots with wood filler and let it dry completely. After that, I sanded the drawer fronts smooth. This step makes a HUGE difference in how professional your final finish looks.

Step 4: Add Molding Appliqués

This is the fun part. I positioned the floral and leaf appliqués on each drawer until I loved the layout. Then I glued them down and taped them in place while they dried.

Pro Tip:
For curved drawer fronts (like this one!), flexible, heat-moldable appliqués work best.

Step 5: Prime

Once everything was smooth and adhered properly, I primed the whole piece. Primer grips the paint, seals the wood, and helps prevent bleed-through. Never skip this step — especially on older furniture.

Step 6: Paint

I chose a creamy white because it makes the floral details pop without feeling too busy. Use long, even strokes if you’re hand-painting. A sprayer works beautifully too.

Step 7: Add New Hardware

I swapped the original knobs for matte brass ones — the perfect warm contrast against the white.

Step 8: Seal It

A light coat of clear topcoat protects your finish, especially if you plan to use this dresser daily.

Tips and tricks

  • Use molds to cover flaws: Appliqués aren’t just decorative, they’re the BEST way to hide veneer damage.
  • Stick to one color for a clean, cohesive look: It lets the raised details shine.
  • Sand between coats for the smoothest finish: lightly scuff with a 220-grit sanding sponge.
  • Play with placement before committing: Lay out all your appliqués and take pictures before gluing.

Ideas for Using Floral Moldings in Your Own DIY Projects

If you’re loving the look of raised appliqués, here are some fun ways to use them:

  • Add them to nightstands for a matching bedroom set
  • Style them on a mirror frame for a romantic touch
  • Transform a plain wooden box into a keepsake gift
  • Upgrade a kitchen cabinet door
  • Decorate a thrifted tray for a coffee table
  • Add to kids’ furniture for a whimsical look
  • Use them on a headboard for a cottage-core vibe

The possibilities are endless!

How do I keep appliqués from popping off?

Make sure the surface is clean, sanded, and dry. Use a strong adhesive and tape them in place until fully cured.

Can I do this on laminate furniture?

Yes!
Just scuff-sand, use a bonding primer, and make sure your appliqués are light enough for the surface.

Do I have to use white paint?

Nope! This would look beautiful in sage green, soft blue, antique pink, black, or even a weathered wood finish.

Should I seal the appliqués before painting?

Not necessary — primer + paint works perfectly.
